reliable bond management.

Client Standard Bank
Year 2024 - 2025
Focus Operational Efficiency
Role Senior UX Designer

A UX redesign project for Standard Bank focused on simplifying complex financial workflows around bills, bonds and investment operations. The project aimed to reduce operational friction, improve visibility across transaction states and create a more intuitive experience for financial teams handling high-volume workflows.

Transforming a manual financial operation into a digital workflow

Bills & Bonds was originally a heavily offline and paper-driven operational process. Financial teams relied on physical documentation, manual verification, and fragmented communication via email and spreadsheets.

This created multiple operational challenges: Slow processing cycles, lack of real-time visibility, and high reliance on human tracking which increased the risk of operational errors.

Legacy Workflow Analysis
02 - Hypothesis
If we digitise and streamline the offline workflow into a structured operational system, financial teams will be able to process transactions faster, reduce manual dependency and gain better visibility across operations.

Understanding the operational reality

The research phase focused heavily on understanding how the offline process functioned in real operational environments. Before designing interfaces, it was important to understand how teams move information between departments and where human errors occurred most frequently.

01 → Offline Mapping

Mapped end-to-end operational journeys from document initiation to approvals and final processing to find bottlenecks.

02 → Digitisation

Identified workflows that could be automated or standardized within the digital platform for better tracking.

03 → User Behaviour

Observed how operational teams handled high-volume workflows under pressure, prioritizing clarity over visual complexity.

Balancing business, operations and usability

The redesign required collaboration between Product, Engineering, Operations, and Compliance. One of the biggest challenges was balancing usability improvements with existing operational dependencies required for trust and auditability.

Simplifying enterprise finance through structured workflows

The design process focused on reducing complexity without removing capability. The approach centered around clear hierarchy, better workflow sequencing, and consistent interaction patterns to reduce operational fatigue.

Design Exploration & Final Solution

Action-focused solutions for complex data

01 → Transaction Monitoring

Redesigned dashboards to provide clearer visibility into transaction states and pending approvals.

02 → Approval Flows

Simplified approval journeys by surfacing critical actions and reducing unnecessary navigation layers.

03 → Search & Filtering

Introduced structured filtering systems that helped users quickly locate transactions across large datasets.

+40%

Increase in operational processing speed through digital workflows.

-60%

Reduction in manual tracking dependency and documentation errors.

Enterprise UX is about reducing operational friction

Bills & Bonds reinforced an important principle: Good enterprise UX is not about making systems look modern. It is about helping users make faster, clearer and more confident decisions in high-pressure environments.
